Today in Math we were happy to welcome back Mme Scham who shared 2 new mental math subtraction strategies with us. Today we tried: 'Using addition to subtract' and 'Using negative numbers to subtract.' Please ask me about these strategies. Which one did I find is the best fit for me? Can I show you how to use these strategies with the question: 123 - 57 ?
In Science, we started a short research task to learn more about 'les vers,' les éponges' and 'les mollusques.' Using short texts provided by Mme, we will fill in an information grid that includes: habitat, diet, a sketch and two interesting facts.
Please ask me what invertebrate I started studying in class this morning. Which one is next one my list?

Hello! It's great to be back after our unexpected break!
Here's what we were up to in Room 208 this morning:
- finishing up our "Art des nombres entiers" task
- practicing how to open our locks and putting them on our lockers!
- working on our et/est homophones and finding other common Français errors in our "On corrige" task
We're looking forward to a great week! :)

Hello, families!
Exciting 'return-to-normal' changes are coming to our school day!
Here's what's new, starting this week:
1. Locks on our lockers!
We practiced using locks last week, and tomorrow's the day we will get our very own lock to put on our locker! We'll now be able to leave our backpacks, phones and all other extras there during the day.
2. Locker stops!
We will begin following a true middle school routine that has us visiting our lockers to switch-up our supplies after periods 2 and 6 rather than remaining in the classroom for this time. We will have 5 minutes to get to our lockers, switch up our gear as needed, grab a quick snack if desired and then head to our next class. This will help us prepare for next year when having supply bins in our homeroom (which was primarily introduced because of COVID) is phased out. This movement will take some time getting used to, but we are excited for this next big step!
3. Lunch time!
We will now eat lunch at the beginning of the lunch hour (11:50-12:10) and then head outside afterwards! Cell phones will stay in our lockers while we are eating and can be collected to use once we head outside at 12:10. The whole school will now be on the same noon hour schedule.
4. Entrance and dismissal
We will continue lining up with their our group in the morning and wait to see our teacher for entry. Our dismissal remains mostly unchanged, but may take a few minutes longer now that we are managing lockers at the end of the day.
We expect some growing pains and adjustment periods with all of these changes, but are excited to be making these steps forward at this point in our school year!
Please be sure to check in with me this week to see how everything is going! :)
Today we had the chance to combine Math and Art!
Please ask me about my drawing: What did I find easy? What part was the most challenging? What creative extras did I add to make my Math artwork unique?
Our finished artworks will be posted in class - and on the blog - later this week. (Or next week if the snow keeps us away longer than expected.)

Today in Français, Mme Champagne was back with more high-end fashion fun! Take a look at the end results! How did we do with our oral directions?
(Want to know more about this fun activity? See THIS POST.)

* Journée de chemise rose (Pink Shirt Day) - tomorrow (Wednesday) *
1. Daily reading with Je Lis or https://jeunesse.short-edition.com/
2. CFOO #7 - Opinions - le mardi 19 avril
*Presentation outline posted in Teams.
3. Badminton intramurals: Thursday at lunch
Hello! Happy Monday!
Today in Math we practiced comparing and ordering positive and negative integers (les nombres entiers) by playing the card game "War." Black suits represented positive numbers and red suits represented negative numbers. We kept track of which cards we turned each turn, determined which of the two numbers was bigger and then ordered them from smallest to biggest at the end of the game.
Please ask me how I did! Did I 'win' most rounds or did my partner? What strategy did I use to put the card values in order at the end of the game?
In Français, we started reviewing a new set of homophones this week: et / est. These words are some of the most frequently used in our writing, yet are some of the ones we mix up the most. Today, after writing down the definitions of the two words, we collaborated in our table groups and as a class to write sentences that include both "et" and "est." This is not as easy as it sounds! After a few tries, we got the hang of it and collectively came up with the four sentences posted below.
We will continue to do a variety of word work with et and est this week.

Hello, friends of learning! :)
Today in Math, we had the chance to work with the superfab Mme Scham to explore some new-to-us metal math strategies for subtraction questions.
After sharing some of our own strategies and having Mme Scham present us with a couple more to try, we worked independently to solve a subtraction question before sharing our steps and reasoning with our small groups and then with the full class.
Bravo to everyone for sharing their thinking, trying something new and celebrating the work of others!

2. Report cards will be sent home via email TODAY (Wednesday).
Hello! Happy Tuesday!
This morning in Français and started a small debate unit - "Les débats absurdes" - which will eventually turn into the base structure of our own persuasive paragraphs. Today's opinion topic:
"Est-ce que le céréale est de la soupe?" - "Is cereal a soup?"
Our goal today was to listen to understand, not to listen to respond. Meaning, we were each allowed to share our thoughts without rebuttal to understand the perspective of our peers. We shared many interesting and fun ideas and offered a whole new perspective on soup and cereal! Please ask me what I think... is cereal a soup?

Hello, friends of learning! Happy April!
We are recharged from our week off and are ready to jump into Term 3 and finish the year strong!
New today: A new table-chair arrangement (in groups!) with a randomized, daily-changing seating plan! It feels so great taking another step towards our return to normal! (And stay tuned for other exciting changes coming soon, too!)
Wishing you all a great week! :)
