Peach Melba and Chocolate Chip Cookies!

Happy Tuesday!

Today in Science we looked at the instructions of how to make Peach Melba. We read a series of steps and had to determine the correct order and the list of ingredients.

We then looked at a chocolate chip cookie recipe. After looking at the original recipe, we then broke up into groups to compare and contrast different Mme-modified versions of the recipe to see what characteristics are helpful.

We noticed that including ingredient measurements, numbering the steps, putting the steps in order and being specific with how to complete a certain step are all important in ensuring that the final product (i.e delicious cookies!) turn out the same way each, regardless of who is baking them.

Keeping these specifics in mind will come in handy as we begin researching and planning a Tomatosphere extension project in class next week. Stay tuned for more info! :)

Tomato Results Are In!

Hello! Happy Monday!

The Tomatosphere results are in!

Of note: our results of Q and R are reversed in the table above. For us, Group Q germinated at 82% and Group R germinated at 57%.

Ta Da! Group R is the group of seeds that were sent to space! Incroyable!

Behold our beautiful tomato plants, as they look today!

We are certified Tomatosphere experts! Bravo!

Can you beat the Tax Man?

Hello learning friends! Happy Friday! :)

This morning in Math, we tried to beat the sneaky "percepteur persévérant" (aka: le Tax Man).

Check out the question below:

Here we are in action. After starting with 1-12$ cheques, many students continued exploring with 1-16$ and then the super bonus of 1-48$! There were so many great Math conversations happening in our classroom this morning. Incredible!

Have a great weekend! :)

Wednedsay!

Hello, friends of learning!

We had a full morning of learning today!

In Math we continued our work with les nombres premiers et composés.

In Science, we continued our work with graphing. Today's examples offered something a little different than our first two examples. Please ask me about them!

In Français, we took time for some independent and small group reading (with brand new just-arrived-this-morning books!) and spent time working on our 'tableau d'inspiration' in PowerPoint.

With so much to do, the time flew by!

Looking forward to another great day tomorrow!

Tuesday!

Hello, friends of learning!

Today in class we created Math art with a 100 chart! Using different colours and symbols to represent different multiples, we were able to differentiate between prime and composite numbers! Amazing! Take a look at the class sample we created, posted below.

We also had the chance to work with Mme Champagne this morning. She came in to get us started with the technical side of our inspiration boards, which is the visual part of the written 'les buts' assignment that we've been working on the past few weeks. We learned how to save a picture to our desktop, submit a picture into Teams, open PowerPoint on Office365 and insert a picture into PowerPoint so that it will generate different design features for us. Pretty neat!

We will begin planning and creating our tableau d'inspiration in class tomorrow and we can't wait to share them with you!

Answers to Yesterday's Math Practice Problems!

Hello! Please find the solutions to the practice word-problems posted below.

Please note that this is one approach, and it is possible that you solved the question in a different order / organization than mine. That's totally fine! :)

The word problems on tomorrow's mini-assessment will be very similar to these, so if you haven't had a chance to practice yet, go back to yesterday's post first and then head back here when you're ready to correct!

Bonne chance! :)

Math Word-problem Practice.

In preparation for the les multiples et facteurs word problems students will work on in class on Thursday, here are a few examples of similar-type questions they may work on at home to prepare.
Please note: word problems, such as those below, have been a part of our daily Math learning throughout this entire unit, so the questions should not be 'new' or impossible' or be met with a "we've never done this before." If your child has any questions, I will be happy to touch base with them over the noon hour tomorrow.
Happy Math practice! :)

A Busy Week Ahead!

Hello friends of learning! Happy Monday!

As we approach the end of Term 1, we will have an especially busy week in class showing our learning in all three subjects so that Mme has the best picture possible as she sits down to write our report cards this coming weekend.

Here's what we will be working on this week:

Math: a short assessment on "les facteurs et le pgfc" tomorrow (Tuesday) and a word-problem task (involving les multiples et les facteurs) on Thursday.

Français: "les buts" final drafts are due tomorrow (Tuesday), oral presentations of "les buts" also starting tomorrow (Tuesday), more listening/viewing tasks and a short article study of Dia de los muertos, which we started in class this morning.

Science: Our Tomatosphere experiment has come to a close, and this week we will: complete our last daily observations, complete observation questions about the experiment overall, and graph our results using the data collected over the last 31 days.

Phew! There will not be a dull moment - or a moment to spare! - in room 208 this week!

Daily updates and reminders will continue to be posted here on the blog throughout the week. And, please note, that while a good amount of class time will be given to complete the above-listed tasks, there is a chance certain items will need to make their way home to be completed and reviewed over the week. I will also be available over the noon hour this week for students who prefer to complete their work at school. (Students will still head outside at the beginning of lunch, but then will have the option to eat and work/ask questions for the remainder of the noon hour if they choose.)

Many thanks in advance for your support this week!

Snowy Friday!

Hello friends of learning!

Despite the snow keeping some of us away, we had a great group and great morning of learning today!

In Francais, we worked on the good copies of our 'les buts' writing task and took some time to read using the Je lis site. A reminder that good copies are due Tuesday and that the Je lis site can be accessed from home for daily French home reading!

In Math, we corrected page 4 of our homework task (see below for a picture of the corrections so you can correct at home) and had a chance to play some Math games together.

We ended the morning with Science, completing our Tomatosphere observations and continuing our graphing lesson. We added a second line to our graph and also added a legend so that we can distinguish one set of results from another. We'll be wrapping up our Tomatosphere assignment next week (30 days goes by quickly!) and will then work on analyzing and representing our data to draw conclusions. Stay tuned for the big group reveal coming soon! :)

Have a great weekend! Stay warm and stay safe! :)

Lest We Forget

Together as a school community we gathered virtually to honour those who fought for our freedom.

After the ceremony, we took time to reflect independently about the ceremony, about

what Remembrance Day means to us and what we are thankful for.

Thank you to all the soldiers who fought and the ones who fought and died. We are all very thankful for the men and women who fought to protect us and our families. It takes a lot of kindness to fight for your country and risk your life, so thank you. To those who we lost, may they rest in peace.

I thought that is was kind of the soldiers to go and help the kids in Afghanistan and respect all of the soldiers that passed.

Some people died or got really injured for us. If World War III could happen at any time and lots of people in this generation will risk their lives - some new and some again - I, too, would do it if I had to.

Remembrance Day is a day about the people who fought in the war to give us peace in Canada but many lives were taken during these wars. These wars have not continued but this day, everybody will remember those who gave their lives for peace.

Je suis reconnaissante pour les personnes qui sont membre de l'armée et aussi pout mon frère qui est un élève-officier.

I remember those who help us get through the soldiers passing away and making them better.

I remember the people who died and fought for us.

I remember those who fought for us so we can live in peace.

I remember my great-grandparents who were in World War II. They passed away in 2016 and this year (COVID).

Remembrance Day is not just about remembrance. It's also about reconciliation.

Thank you for serving in the wars to protect us.

May God bless the families who have lost loved ones in a war.

If the fallen were here right now, I would say 'Thank you for your service.'

Merci à tous qui ont servi dans les guerres.

I am thankful for al the people that fought for Canada.

I remember those who died for us and fought for us.

Je suis reconnaissant qu'on n'est pas dans une guerre maintenant.

Thank you for your service. Merci de votre service.

Science demo Monday!

Happy Monday!

Today in Science we did a lab demo to see is salted water boils faster than "normal" (unsalted) water. We are using this demo to solidify our understanding of independent and dependent variables, as well as an introduction to graphing.

The results of the first test showed that salted water boiled first, but Mme Careen was not convinced, so she performed the experiment again over the lunch hour (with a few small tweaks to the equipment set up) and found the opposite results!

So, tomorrow in class, the experiment will once again be repeated so that we can compare results from all three tests to determine the answer to the 'age old' question: does adding salt to water really help it to boil faster? 🤔

(And don't be afraid to try this at home! This can easily be reproduced using two same-sized pots, filled with the same quantity of water, being heated up at the same heat level on the stove. We used thermometers and a stop watch in class, but, the boiling point can easily be seen by observation and the time can be controlled with a timer app on a device. Have fun experimenting!)

Happy Diwali!

Hello families! Happy Thursday! Happy Diwali!

Today in class, we shared our group resumes and completed a set of comprehension questions from the short story we've been studying, Suresh le garçon qui venait de loin. Coincidentally, the story is about a boy who moved to Canada from India and is able to share about the celebration of Diwali with his classmates.

Please ask me about the story and about the new words I added to my français vocabulary as a result of reading and studying this story!

Hello learning friends!

Today in Math, we worked in randomized groups of 2 or 3 to solve a word problem about Aisha's reading plans at her cabin. Please ask me about my group's strategy - how did we calculate the reading times and figure out when Aisha would be done reading her books?

Looking forward to a great week! :)
