Hot water rises, cold water sinks

Hello! Happy rainy Wednesday!

In Science, we have started learning about the properties of fluids and today we saw how hot water rises and cold water sinks.

Starting with a large container of room temperature water, Mme Careen dropped in three ice cubes coloured with blue food colouring. We saw right away that as the ice cubes started to melt, the blue colour was moving down to the bottom of the container.

Next, red colouring was added to a small container of hot water and then slowly poured out on the surface of the water in the container. Instead of moving downward, the hot water moved horizontally across the top of the room temperature water.

We ended up with striped water! Red on top, clear in the middle and blue on the bottom. So fun! (You can see the remaining ice cube in the top-right corner and how the blue colour (cold water) is moving downward.)

This is after that water sat for a while so the temperatures of the three waters have started to mix. Eventually, the water in the container will all be purple.

Where do we see this 'property' in our every day lives? Keep in mind fluids are liquids and gases, so hot air and cold air will act in the same way! (We explored this is class yesterday, but Mme forgot to get pictures! Ah, zut! Please ask me about yesterday's demos, too!)
