Happy Costume Friday!

Happy Friday! We had a great morning together.

Today's Halloween Math problem. Can you figure out the missing numbers?

We worked in randomized groups of 2 or 3 to solve a mystery-shape Math puzzle.

Surprise! The puzzle is in the shape of a bat!

Next, we worked in a different randomized group to complete a Halloween-vocabulary crossword puzzle.

La chanson de squelettes! Mme's favourite Halloween song! Check in out HERE!

We are so festive in our costumes!
Have a great weekend!

A busy Monday!

Hello families! Happy Monday! Happy Pyjama Day!

We had a busy morning together and things are shaping up for a productive week!

In Math, we started with a 'spooky' Math starter. Can you solve the final equation based on the hints given?

In Français, we got to work on two big tasks: CFOO and writing our first drafts our goals for the year.

What is CFOO?

CFOO (Le Club Fabuleux des Orateurs et Oratrices) is a public speaking "club" (similar to its English friend TUSC) that will help students improve their oral French skills through short presentations. There are fifteen different presentation options, separated into three categories: Opinion, Creativity and Research.

Our CFOO preparation and presentation periods alternate on Day 4, periods 2 and 3.

For the first presentation, we will be choosing one of the five Opinion options. We will prepare a short oral presentation, fulfilling the criteria specific to our topic. (All categories are outlined on the sheet in our binder. There is also a photo posted below). Our presentation is in the form of speech, but our speeches can be take on/be supported with a variety of options: a poster, a puppet play, a poem, a painting, a PowerPoint, a movie, etc. As long as our public-speaking skills are on display, the possibilities are truly endless!

Leading up to the first presentation, we will continue discussing what we should keep in mind while making an oral presentation to the class. This will include: keeping eye contact with the audience, having a confident stance while at the front of the room, projecting our voice and speaking at a good pace with expression.

We had a short block of time to begin our presentations this morning and now the rest of the preparation (finishing our speech and practicing our presentation) will happen on our own time. If we would like Mme Careen to review our speech with us before our presentation, we are welcome to make an appointment to work with her at lunch over the coming week. And, please note that any visual supports must be emailed to Mme (or brought in on a USB) in advance of presentation day.

Our first CFOO presentations are set for Tuesday, November 2. Mark your calendars! :)

We ended the morning with Science. We had 4 days worth of observations to catch up on! Mme Careen was able to visit our tomato plants on Friday and over the weekend and made observations for us. Did you know that the school cooled down to a chilly 14℃ over the weekend? Brrrrr!

Please ask me about my tomato plants and what else we noticed about the plants today.

(Also, please take a minute or two to read through all of the agenda items posted below. There are quite a few and we want to make sure that we're keeping on top of all of our tasks this week!)

Happy Thursday!

Hello, families!

It's been a short, but busy week!

Today in class we:

1. Completed a 20-minute mental math pre-assessment that will allow Mme Careen to see what strategies we already know well and what strategies we should review and learn this year.

2. Began working on a short writing piece, "Les buts." We are choosing 4-5 things we would like to work on this year and writing out an action plan (2-3 short, specific tasks) that can put in place for each in order to be successful with our goals.

3. Had a visit from Mme Scham who introduced us to a fun new Math game! (We can easily play at home. Please ask me how!)

4. Finished our morning with our tomato observations!

🍅 Tomatosphere! 🍅

Today was an exciting day in Room 208! We planted Space Tomatoes! :)

How might someone plant a space tomato?
Here's our planting method:

As part of a 'blind test,' we planted two types of seeds - one from a control group and another from a group of seeds that went to space on Blue Origin's New Shepherd Space Flight. We each planted 2 seeds - one from each seed group. The groups this year are "Q" and "R" but we don't yet know which letter belongs to what seed group (hence the blind test). After planting our seeds, we placed our peat pots in mini-greenhouses (seedling trays with humidity covers), away from direct sunlight and cold-air drafts in order to provide ideal growing conditions.

We will make daily observations every day for the next 30 days. Our daily observations will include writing the date, the day of the experiment, the time of the observation, the temperature of the class and how many seeds from each group have germinated. It is expected that the seeds will start germinating between days 5 and 7, meaning we should start seeing tiny stems and leaves as early as Tuesday or Wednesday!

As the experiment continues, we will discuss the need for collecting this type of data as it pertains to humans colonizing Mars. We will also be discussing the Scientific Method and learning how to: write detailed hypotheses, analyze and graph our collected data and represent our findings in well-written conclusions.

At the conclusion of the experiment, we will be submitting our results to Tomatosphere, and at that point we will discover the identities of the seed groups!

Participation in this month-long experiment will not only help Canadian scientists address the question of how we supply space exploration missions with life support requirements, it may also inspire us to pursue studies in Science and Technology as our space scientists and Mars explorers of the future.

Pretty cool, right? 🍅

*****

AGENDA

1. Ask me about our Tomatosphere project! What did I name my tomatoes? What are my predictions about which group of seeds may have been to space?

2. Think about my own hypothesis - what do I want to explore/observe about our tomato plants? - Come ready to share and write your prediction in class tomorrow (Friday).

Heureusement des hot dogs!

Hello! Happy Wednesday!

Today in Math we were planning a party for a group of close to 100 people and had to solve a very common party-planning dilemma...

Knowing that hot dog buns come in 8s, and the hot dogs themselves come in 12s, how many packages of each do we need to buy, without having any extra, in order to feed everyone at the party? 🤔

To solve the problem, we collaborated in randomized groups of 2 or 3 at the white boards to see how many of each item we needed to add to our shopping carts. Once we solved the first scenario, Mme Careen was ready with next steps to keep us thinking... What if the party has almost 200 people? What if we head to Costco and buy buns in packages of 16 and hot dogs in packages of 36 instead?

We all worked well in our groups and are (secretly) excited to see what sort of Math multiples problem Mme has waiting for us next! 🙂

Happy Tuesday!

Hello learning friends! Happy Tuesday!

It was so great to be reunited with all our classmates today! Our classroom is full once again! :)

This morning, we had our first "La table ronde" of the year and took time to read a book, As-tu rempli un seau aujourd'hui? and talk about our school's four beliefs: Respect, Intégrité, Responsabilité et Excellence.

We each had a chance to reflect on what we can do and what we need Mme Careen to do in order to create a positive and safe learning environment that exemplifies these four beliefs. We wrote our ideas on "sticky dos" and placed them on chart paper. Mme Careen will collate our ideas and use them to create our classroom belief statement.

Stay tuned over the coming weeks to see what we value as learners here at Ecole Ness.

*

In Science news this morning, we learned about a very exciting experiment that we will be beginning later this week! Enter, Tomatosphere!

Astronaut Thomas Pasquet gave us a quick overview (see the English version of the video HERE) and we also learned that this year's tomato seeds traveled to space aboard  Blue Origin's New Shephard Mission! Amazing! (Click HERE to see a sample flight.)

Stay tuned over the coming days to learn more about the Tomatosphere program! So exciting! 🍅

It's Friday!

Happy Friday! Happy 4 Weeks of Middle School!

We had short but great time together this morning.

In Francais, we played 2 rounds of a Qui Suis-je: Cinéma edition and then we worked in pairs to write a summary for the Terry Fox article we've been studying this week. We will share our summaries together as a class on Tuesday.

Next, we worked in groups of 2 or 3 for a Thanksgiving-themed "Amazing Race" style activity. Since there was a stop in the rain, we were able to do this activity outside so we could spread out and enjoy the fresh air! Please ask me who I worked with and what questions we had to answer. (Is there a food that starts with E in French? What about I? 🤔)

Such a fun way to end the morning!

Wishing you all a safe, restful long weekend. 🦃

Super Hero Math and Thankful Pumpkins

Hello families! Happy Thursday!

This morning in Math, we had a SUPER time practicing our multiples.

We coloured numbered squares using different colours for different multiples to discover a SUPER surprise!

Ta da! Math is SUPER!

In Français, we continued our thankful writing by turning our brainstormed-lists into sentences, which then turned into pumpkins!

We wrote our 10 "Je suis reconnaissant(e)..." sentences on strips of orange paper.

We then followed a set of printed instructions (no help from Mme!) to turn our sentence strips into thankful pumpkin!

Here is our finished, socially distanced, pumpkin patch!
We truly have so much to be thankful for. :)

Our Wednesday morning in pictures...

Working in small groups today, we solved a Math word problem involving multiples. What place do you need to be in line in order to take home all three customer prizes?

We started our second writing activity of the year: What are things we are thankful for? The words listed on the board are just some of the ideas we came up with! We will be publishing our writing in a special thanksgiving-themed way tomorrow. Stay tuned!

We continued our Terry Fox article study today with the "Questionner" and "Clarifier" steps. We came up with some insightful questions based on the information we read. We also looked up new-to-us words using the website wordreference.com.

Great work this morning, team! :)

Terry Fox!

Hello, friends!

Today was all about Terry Fox!

In Français, we started studying an article about Terry Fox and then, during period 4, we were outside for our school's Terry Fox walk! Together as a class, we walked a 2km loop in the community. It was so nice to get outside!

If you're interested in donating a 'Toonie for Terry' please do so through SchoolCash Online. An email was sent home from the school office earlier today. [And, if you would like to give more than a toonie, please note that you can change the quantity of donations made. (For example, if you would like to donate $10, you can add 5 donations.)]

Thanks everyone for a great morning! :)
